Dinky Toys 187; Volkswagen Karmann Ghia
There were some really nice Volkswagen models in the Dinky range. If they loved Triumph best and had a bit of a fixation with Rolls-Royce then next favourite was VW. This is a little stunner, the early Dinky Beetle (262 - not the later one which is not so nice), the 1500, the 1600 all are really nice models.
Of the Dinky VWs I love the old Beetle best and this one second best. I remember it from my childhood, but cannot remember if I had it or one of my friends did. I was only 7 when it was withdrawn from the range so I can be forgiven for forgetting and I have to admit that as a child if it didn't have seats and something that opened, I wasn't that interested, however this one stands out for some reason and in the green/cream colour too.
Those of us who know our Corgis and Dinkys know that there is a Corgi Volkswagen Karmann Ghia too which looks nothing like this and I've always been a bit puzzled as to what was going on. Thanks to Wikipedia the fog has lifted a little. This car is based on the Type 1 Volkswagen - the Beetle in fact, it is a Beetle Coupe GT. and was made from the mid fifties right through to the mid seventies, twenty years in production, it is known as the Type 14. The other one is based on the Type 3 Volkwagen, the 1500 and was made from 1961 to 1969, it was larger, more up-market and a lot more expensive and was a lot less successful, this one was the type34. So know we all know.
Dinky produced it between 1959 and 1964 in shades of green with a cream roof and red with a black roof. They all have windows and spun hubs.
