Dinky Toys 23a; Racing Car |
The Racing car was produced from 1934 to 1952 with a break from 1941 to 1946 while the factory was switched to war work, it was released again 1954-1956 as 220 in silver with red hubs and RN4 only. It is obviously not a model of any particular car, just an anonymous representation of a single seat track racing car. There are four distinct versions, the first release being in lead and numbered 23 without the a. With dozens of variations across the castings of colour and accent colours you really have to consult a reference guide like Ramsay to know exactly what you are looking at.
It is one of the very first Dinky Toys products.
First version: lead body, 1,2,3, or 4 exhaust stubs, no driver (1934-1935)
Second version: as first casting but cast in zamak (normal diecast metal) produced 1935-1941
Third version: has a driver, a raised circle for the racing number and six exhausts in the tail. (1946-?)
Fourth version: has a driver but no raised circles for the racing numbers (?-1952)
It has now been included in the Atlas Editions range of re-released Dinky Toys.
