This is modelled on the Series 1 Audax Minx produced from 1956 to 1957
which while designed in house by Rootes Group took its styling cues from
Studebaker in the US. The Minx was restyled almost annually right
through its production life up to 1967, you can see the Audax influence
through all the Hillman, Singer, Sunbeam and Humber saloons and coupes
of the late 50s and 1960s.
Dinky kept this version in their range from 1958 to 1961, it was either
green over tan or grey over blue. Early releases had painted hubs
replaced later in the run by spun hubs. A sign of changing times though
is that all versions had windows.
This Dinky was sourced prior to 2004 from Ebay (which was when I stared
keeping records) . You will see the number 13 on the baseplate. When I
started to collect diecasts I bought a set of 500 numbered stickers to
use to catalogue them. When I switched from collecting to dealing in
model cars I just continued the numbers, by that time I was well over
1,000. So I started at 1 with a Corgi Bedford Car Transporter, this
Hillman was number 13. At the time of writing in December 2020 I have
just used number 151,000. These days they are barcodes.
