Dinky Toys 237; Mercedes-Benz Racing Car

Dinky Competition Cars

This is modelled on the W196 Formula 1 car as raced by Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss it won 9 of 12 races entered and captured the only two world championships in which it competed (1954/1955). Don't let the bodywork fool you, it is a genuine Formula 1 car. The enclosed bodywork was allowed back then (see the Dinky 236 Connaught), Mercedes used two body shells on the car, this is the Monza body used on tracks with fast straights and slower corners, there was also a conventional open wheel version used on circuits with more demanding corners.

The Dinky was made from 1957 to 1964. It was always white but there are variation in the finish, matt or gloss, the box type, wheel hubs (cast, spun or plastic) and racing numbers - some on transfers and some on paper stickers. Values are fairly consistent across variations, in the catalogues it is the plastic hubs version with racing numbers on paper stickers which are valued most highly.
