Dinky Toys 162; Ford Zephyr
The Ford Zephyr was manufactured by the Ford Motor Company in the United Kingdom. Between 1950 and 1972, it was sold as a more powerful six cylinder saloon to complement the four cylinder Ford Consul. This is the Mk1 version produced by Ford UK between 1951 and 1956.
Were these spoilers do you think? In 1956 Corgi appeared and in their opening range was a Ford Consul, here we have Dinky bringing out the Zephyr - a more luxurious version of the same car in the same year. The same thing happened with the Vauxhall Velox and Cresta. Corgi brought out the base model and Dinky came back with the 'de-luxe' version. In the case of the Vauxhall Dinky had the face-lifted version with the larger rear window. Dinky managed two-tone paint, but Corgi was the 'One with windows'.
Dinky released this model in 1956 and it remained in the range until 1960. It was at the time that Dinky cars had no windows suspension or silver hubs to look like chrome hubcaps. By 1960 this was looking very antique against the new generation Corgis. Colours were all two-tone; cream over dark green, cream over lime green, pale blue over mid blue which is seen with a dull black or gloss black base. It is this late two-tone blue with the gloss black base that is the one to have, next best is cream over lime.
