Dinky Toys; Austin Healey 100
There are only few cars where Corgi and Dinky made the same car at the same time inviting a direct comparison.
The Austin-Healey 100 was one of them, a sports car built between 1951 and 1959 by the British Motor Corporation. It was developed by Donald Healey to be produced in-house by Healey's company on Austin A90 Atlantic mechanicals. Healey built a single "Healey 100" for the 1952 London Motor Show, and the design impressed BMC, owner of Austin, so much that the firm decided to bring production in-house. The "100" name comes from Donald Healey, who named it after the fact that this was one of the few cars of the era which could achieve 100 mph
Both Dinky & Corgi models are good and both are characteristic of their own brand. The Dinky is absolutely a toy, chunky and brightly coloured, The Corgi is both a toy and a model too, finely engineered and realistic. Dinky made the Austin Healey 100 competition model from 1955 to 1959. There were a number of colours made; cream with red seats & hubs-RN 23, yellow with blue seats & hubs-RN 21, cream with red seats & hubs-RN 22, yellow with blue seats & hubs-RN 28. All of these are sought after and of a reasonable value. The most valuable being the cream one with RN 22 and the yellow one with RN 28. The street version was made from 1957 to 1960 as an English Dinky and from 1960 to 1961 as a French Dinky. I has now reappeared in the excellent Atlas Dinky range produced by Norev.
