Matchbox/Lesney 75b; Ferrari Berlinetta

The Ferrari 250 was built from 1953 to 1964. The company's most successful early line, the 250 series included many variants over this long production run. This car is a model of the 1962 250GT Lusso Berlinetta designed by Pinin Farina and made by Scaglietti. Rock star Eric Clapton owned one, and an example that had been owned by Steve McQueen was sold at auction for $2.3 million on 16 August 2007. It is now recognised as one of the best sports cars to be produced in the 1960s.

The Matchbox model spanned the introduction of Superfast wheels and the earlier regular wheels version can be found with either wire wheels or chromed hubcaps. The order of release was wires - chromes - Superfast. The body work is either red or metallic green The very early wire wheels cars are red, with the majority of the regular wheels cars being green and having a small number of red again at the end of the run after the wheels had changed to chrome hubcaps. In the Superfast release you will mostly see red cars with a few green ones, only a few of the Superfast cars got silver painted trim. One final point, the Superfast ones never had a tow hook so the fact it is missing does not mean it broke off.

The Ferrari Berlinetta, 75b was released in 1965, it was changed to Superfast wheels in 1970 and was deleted the following year. There are some versions of this car to look out for; red with wire wheels or chrome hubs or green with Superfast wheels.
