Matchbox Battle Kings K-108/1; M3A1 Half Track APC
Between the world wars, the US Army sought to improve the tactical
mobility of its forces. With the goal of finding a high-mobility
infantry vehicle, the Ordnance Department had evaluated the half-track
design by testing French Citroën-Kégresse vehicles. The White Motor
Company produced a prototype half track using their own chassis and the
body of the M3 Scout Car. The design, using as many commercial
components as possible to improve reliability and speed production, was
standardized in 1940 and built by the Autocar Company, Diamond T Motor
Company, and the White Company.
This must be one of the very few 1974 King-Size releases which was based
on any vehicle known in the real world and it is unusually small in
scale, being 1:60 or so I guess. This makes it perfect for rail layouts
and the little Airfix soldiers available at the time - although the
lurid colours detract a little from the realism
The Battle Kings range was released in 1974 and consisted of an
assortment of models of real military vehicles and the usual Matchbox
crowd of made-up fantasy vehicles. There were 18 items in the range.
