1973Matchbox King Size K-21/1; Mercury Cougar; Gold, Red Seats
This is really nice. Among the big trucks, weird made up nonsense cars
and horribly, crudely modelled passenger cars which made up the Kings
Size / SuperKings range of the 70s, there are some real gems, and this
is the best of them. It is an excellent little model, 1:50 scale I would
guess, reminding one of the Lone Stars of ten years earlier, but much
better. It has nice suspension, parallel wheel steering, opening doors,
nice interior, good modelling, it has the lot.
The car is the series 1 Mercury Cougar from 1967/9 which at the time was
a rebodied Mustang, taking the pony car a little up-market. I have a
road test of one somewhere comparing it to my old Daimler Sovereign 420
which places it firmly in the luxury/performance saloon sector.
Lesney had it in the range from 1969 to 1971 when the casting was
chopped about and had massively oversized wheels added making the Cougar
Dragster sold as part of the Drag Pack (K-28/1), which was nowhere near
as nice. The paintwork is always gold, seats can be white or red. |
