Volkswagen Saloon - 181

This is an odd one. When I saw it at a toy fair in Chester I absolutely had to have it. I was of course aware of this toy when I was a kid and never gave it a second thought in those days, it was dull, boring, out of date (small rear window) and didn't do anything. With the benefit of 40 years hindsight the fact that it is not a current model means nothing, but given the comparison to its contemporaries in my collection the modelling seems very basic.

Given all that its still a very attractive object, there's a few of these old Dinkys that have the same effect, simple even crude models that one just wants to handle. Gibberish I know.

Back to planet earth. This is a late release with the spun hubs rather than cast. The Great Book of Dinky has this one remaining in production until 1969. That is thirteen years since Corgi put windows in every model and the Beetle Corgi themselves had been making for five years had opening front and back, a fully detailed interior and working steering. Mind you it cost a little more than 3/9d.
