The one on the right is in full John Player fig while the one on the left does not mention the cigarettes at all. The JPS liveried car is the original, older release and is actually a better made item, heavier and a more faithful replica of Jackie Stewart's remarkably successful racing car.

Officially it is the Lotus Ford 72 and isn't it a pretty thing? I always like the John Player black and gold livery, and how interesting to see that just a few years ago (OK nearly 40 years ago) we gave children toys to play with which advertised cigarettes. You will find this car in the black and gold with JPS sponsorship and with Texaco sponsorship, it also appears in a gift set on a trailer towed behind a Lotus Elite sports car. It even appears as a very large model, 1:18 scale. The stand-alone Lotus 72 GP car in 1:36 scale (N.154) ran from 1973 to 1979 with JPS graphics and from 1979 to 1983 with Texaco graphics. This article is really about the JPS 1973 release, it is noticeably heavier than the later release and appears to be rather more solidly made. The price guides make no differential between the earlier and later releases.
