We're in Corgi heartland here - a slightly exotic yet familiar saloon car of the day, the Renault R16 was very innovative, one of the first 5 door hatchbacks, only competition was the Austin Maxi. So of course Corgi make a finely modelled version of the French car, using the Renault's novel features to add novel features to the toy - reclining front seats, opening hatch and lift-up parcel shelf and the under-bonnet spare wheel. Only the tow bar spoils the line of the model. If only Corgi had stuck with models like this.

The Renault R16 was first seen the year before in GS13 as a news camera car covering the Tour de France cycle race. This is its first use as a stand-alone model and it is always burgundy metactallic with cast spoked hubs and yellow seats. It was in the catalogue in this form for just 1969, being replaced by No.202; the same casting with Whizzwheels, which ran from 1970 to 1972 and is metallic blue.

It's interesting to see that my example in metallic burgundy has suffered the same paint loss as my Mini, my Adams Probe and my rally Rover 2000 - all in the same colour.
