LAND ROVER WITH FERRARI ON TRAILER

Ecurie Corgi Gift Set -GS17

Ecurie Corgi is misleading. You have to be a complete Corgi Anorak to know what it refers to. GS17 was released in 1963 with the newly updated Land Rover in red towing a low loading racing car trailer with the new Ferrari 156 aboard. It was though, planned originally in 1961 when the Land Rover would have been a 406 Series 1 109" in green with the tin tilt. The trailer would have been the same but the racing car was a BRM in green in its 'S' version with suspension. The 1961 release was to have had 'Ecurie Corgi' decals on the sides of the Land Rover tilt, presumably to echo the 'Ecurie Ecosse' logo on the Commer racing car transporter. 'Ecurie' means racing stable.

Some of the 'Code 3' boys have been selling Ecurie Corgi sets on eBay and a fine curiosity it makes. On page 108 of the Great Book of Corgi there is a picture of the box proof for the set that never was and they have used that as a basis for the code 3 sets. They have even made the boxes. Good luck to them I say. Steve Flowers is selling the decals and as all the models involved were produced in massive quantities and are never going to be rare, well I might have a go myself.

This is not that set. It is the delayed release two years later. Land Rover Series 2, Ferrari 156 & trailer with no reference to Ecurie anything. Still nice though. The trailer was never sold on its own, but turned up from time to time in various gift sets.
