The one with the wire drawbar was the original, the cast drawbar
came out later, probably 1962. It contained a single horse, the horse in the
pictures is correct. The Pony Trailer was frequently
part of a Gift Set with the Land Rover 109" pickup
There are a number of variations on this item which do not really affect
value. The early ones are red with a black or brown chassis. There are some of
these too with a cream body on a red chassis. Early ones will have a wire
drawbar and turned hubs. The chassis casting was adapted to have a solid cast
drawbar and this is on some of the red/black items. All the later releases are
tan with a cream roof and have spun hubs and a cast drawbar.

As a kid I must have been given the gift set because I still have the
Land Rover, although broken backed through being trodden upon and with the front
bumper broken away and I also still have the very battered horse box, sans tow
bar, shown bottom left. God knows how many times I tried to fix it with fuse wire. I have strong
memories of the tin rear tilt off the Land Rover getting squashed, again by
being trodden on, but the horse lasted a long time in my farm box with the cows
and sheep. Being a farmer's son this was obviously a suitable gift for me to
receive, I just remember being put to play with my tractors in the same corner of
the big back kitchen where the wellies and mucky coats were kept, just too far from
the Rayburn and bloody cold. There's no wonder that I have an iron stomach and
never fall ill - my antibodies were bred tough at a very early age from playing
among the wellies. |
