What is code 3?

Some people are confused over the question of Codes 1, 2 and 3, so here are a few words of explanation.

  • Code 1. -- Models entirely produced by the Company and made generally available.
  • Code 2. -- Models produced by the Company, but in restricted numbers, and consequently not generally available to collectors, or models which are subsequently altered by a third party (such as repainting or adding new decals), but with the full permission of the original producing Company.
  • Code 3. -- Models which are subsequently altered without seeking permission from the original producing Company

That definition thanks to TJ Model Trucks on http://www.tjmodeltrucks.co.uk/

In my mind Code 3 refers to the models the maker should have made. There has been so much research done into Dinky & Corgi especially since they became collectable that there is significant knowledge now about variants that never made it into production, but nevertheless interest the imagination of the collector.

These range from a special favourite of mine, the Citroen ID19 Safari Hearse, including coffin, to the many vehicles modelers imagine Chipperfields Circus might have had and get painted and decaled up appropriately.

In short it is a restoration to something that never existed in the first place, but might have done had the maker thought differently.
